LONDON (MarketWatch) -- European stocks struggled for direction early Thursday in what's likely to be a quiet trading session as U.S. markets remain closed. Among stocks on the move, newspaper publisher Daily Mail & General Trust (UK:DMGT 564.50, 0.00, 0.00%) dropped 2.4% after reporting its annual results and Thomas Cook Group (UK:TCG 189.00, 0.00, 0.00%) rose 1.6% after agreeing a joint venture in Russia. The U.K. FTSE 100 index (UK:UKX 5,657, +75.82, +1.36%) rose 0.1% to 5,660.85, the French CAC 40 index (FR:PX1 3,748, +23.19, +0.62%) slipped 0.1% to 3,743.80 and the German DAX 30 index (DX:DAX 6,824, +118.80, +1.77%) was flat at 6,826.63.
