The U.S. dollar rallied against a basket of the world’s leading currencies on Tuesday, pressuring precious metals.
The U.S. Dollar Index (DXY) climbed 0.5% to 77.18 in mid-morning trading, while the euro fell 0.6% to 1.3862 against the greenback.
Gold futures, which reached an overnight high of $1,437, slid to as low as $1,423.70 per ounce before paring their losses.
Silver hit $36.53 earlier this morning, but relinquished its gains and turned slightly lower at $35.81 per ounce.
