CP: Higher Silver Prices Lead to US Mint Product Price Increases

On March 18, 2011, the United States Mint published notice of price increases for several of their numismatic products. Later the same day, pricing adjustments took place for the 2010 Silver Proof Set and 2010 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set. A price change for the upcoming 2011 Quarters Silver Proof Set will be effective for the start of sales next week.

In recent years, pricing adjustments for US Mint numismatic products have become more common, as prices for the underlying metals have become more volatile. The US Mint adopted a special policy covering most gold and platinum products, which allows adjustments to be made as frequently as weekly. The policy does not cover adjustments for commemorative coins or silver products, which must be executed through publication within the Federal Register.

The 2010 Silver Proof Set originally went on sale August 26, 2010 priced at $56.95. Each set contains 1.33823 troy ounces of silver content (5 quarters, half dollar, dime in 90% silver), in addition to $5.06 face value in other proof coins (cent, nickel, 5 dollar coins). At the time of release, the silver price of $19.11 per ounce resulted in a silver value of $25.57 before the face value of the additional coins. The current silver value included in the set has now risen to $48.48. The US Mint price for the product was raised to $64.95.

The 2010 and 2011 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Sets each contain five quarters struck in 90% silver. The silver content per set is 0.90420 troy ounces, yielding a current silver value of $32.76. The newly effective US Mint prices are $39.95 for the 2010 set and $41.95 for the 2011 set.
