MW: Canada market boosted by energy, materials stocks
SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Energy and materials stocks boosted the Canadian market Wednesday as both oil and gold saw slight gains. The S&P/TSX Composite Index (CA:$ISPTX 13,888.25, +86.85, +0.63%) rose 0.6% to 13,878 led by the S&P/TSX Capped Energy Index (CA:TTEN 343.14, +3.02, +0.89%) , which was up 1%. The S&P/TSX Capped Materials Index (CA:TTMT 440.35, +3.13, +0.72%) rose 0.7%. Suncor Energy Inc. (CA:SU 42.44, +0.39, +0.93%) shares rose 1.1%, Barrick Gold Corp. (CA:ABX 50.96, +0.61, +1.21%) shares advanced 1.3%, and shares of Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan (CA:POT 54.80, +0.81, +1.50%) were up 1.4%. Another standout gainer was Research In Motion Ltd. (CA:RIM 52.55, +0.92, +1.78%) , whose shares advanced 1.9% in recent activity.
