RTRS:Kenya shilling hovers at new low, oil sector weighs

NAIROBI, May 18 (Reuters) - The Kenyan shilling KES=
hovered near its all time-low against the dollar on Wednesday
and traders said dollar demand from oil importers could push the
local currency to a new record.
At 0612 GMT, commercial banks posted the shilling at
86.50/70 against the dollar, marginally stronger than Tuesday's
close at 86.60/70.
"If oil (dollar) demand comes in we may go lower to about
86.80, but otherwise we will play around here," said Sameer
Lagadia, head of trading at Diamond Trust Bank.
"The tea sector offered some support for the shilling as
they come in last night to sell dollars," he said.
The shilling eased off its new all-time low of 86.77 -- hit
on Tuesday after the central bank bought euro for the fifth time
in the last two weeks -- after tea exporters cashed in on the
shilling's weakness.
The central bank has bought 22 million euros since May 10, a
move that markets players say has pushed the shilling to its new
low against the greenback.
Some traders said domestic indicators pointed to a weaker
shilling, although shifts in the international environment could
help emerging markets such as Kenya.
"The shilling still remains vulnerable on weak macro
fundamentals. Risk appetite is back and it has offered support
for emerging markets currencies," said Joshua Anene, a trader at
Commercial Bank of Africa.
