RTRS:UK gas slips on weak energy prices, demand concerns

* Ormen Lange gas field to restart around June 17 - Shell

* UK gas demand slips 14 percent below seasonal norms

LONDON, June 16 (Reuters) - British gas prices extended losses on Thursday morning on the back of weak demand levels and worries that eurozone debt problems may dent energy consumption in Europe, traders said.

Britain's benchmark gas contract, winter 2011/12 gas fell to a one-week low on Thursday, slipping in line with weaker crude and concerns about Greece's debt problems spreading to wider eurozone markets and curbing energy demand. <^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

"The combination of profit taking, weaker oil and investors looking toward currency safety after fears resurfaced surrounding Greek debt and the relatively weaker prompt helped pressure the front season contract lower," one British gas market analyst said. The front winter shed 1.20 pence on Thursday morning, trading at 71.70 pence per therm.

Short-term prices also fell, following weak demand levels and the outlook of an upturn in Norwegian imports as the huge Ormen Lange gas field is expected to return from maintenance over the coming days.

Gas for Thursday delivery traded in line with prices on Wednesday at 58.75 pence per therm as gas demand was pegged 14 percent below seasonal norms, according to National Grid data.
