NS:Gas price rise for Queenslanders

AAP

Gas prices will rise an average $24 a year for about 150,000 Queenslanders following a decision by the industry's regulator.

The Australian Energy Regulator (AER) has allowed the two gas distributors, Envestra and APT Allgas, to increase tariffs between seven and eight per cent from next month.

Envestra supplies Brisbane and regional areas such as Ipswich, Rockhampton and Gladstone and some 3000 commercial and industrial customers.

The APT Allgas network supplies about 79,000 homes in Brisbane and regional areas, including Toowoomba and the Gold Coast, and 5000 commercial or industrial customers.

AER chairman Andrew Reeves said both increases were below each distributor's request.

"In its draft decision, the AER approved some aspects of Envestra's proposed capital and operating expenditure programs, but did not consider some elements to be adequately justified, such as the significant mains replacement program," Mr Reeves said.

He said the average increase of about $24 did not include inflation.
