WC:Gilley Says McGregor Backed Million Dollar Bribe
By Lisa Blackwell
Ronnie Gilley told jurors today that he offered Senator Scott Beason one million dollars for his vote.
Gilley told jurors he would contribute the money to Beason's campaign in exchange for his vote in favor of a constitutional amendment that would let people vote on the issue of bingo.
He told McGregor that he was broke and that it would have to come out of McGregor’s share of country crossing which was at least 20 percent of the gross holdings.
Beason would have rounded out the 21 votes they needed, but he later backed out on the offer.
Gilley also testified that a total of 600,000 dollars was contributed to Senator Harri Anne Smith’s campaign.
In a recorded conversation on March 11 2010, Smith told Gilley that she needed another 400,000 dollars to finish out the campaign and that anything he could give would be appreciated.
Smith told him to make the check out to the Tennessee Valley PAC.
Gilley testified that prior to that, he spent 217,000 dollars on smith's campaign fundraiser and that money came from McGregor's interest in country crossing.
Gilley is expected to back on the witness stand Monday.
