MW: Socks gain more after Chicago manufacturing index

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- U.S. stocks surged further Thursday after an index of manufacturing in the Chicago area surprised to the upside. Pulling into positive territory for the second quarter, the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.82% rose 95.44 points to 12,356.86. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index SPX +0.67% climbed 8.57 points to 1,315.98. The Nasdaq Composite Index COMP +0.78% added 21.65 points to 2,762.14.
