EE:US Dollar exchange rate, USD: What to expect this week

The euro dollar exchange rate is 0.131% higher with 1 EUR = 1.4530 USD.

The pound dollar exchange rate is 0.374% higher on the day with 1 GBP = 1.6126 USD.

Barclays Capital have put forward their views on what we could see from the US dollar exchange rate in the week ahead. Nonfarm payrolls are expected to provide the usual fun:

"Friday's employment statistics are likely to be the focus of attention in the US this week.

And ahead of these releases, initial jobless claims and ADP private payrolls are also likely to matter as the market looks for guidance on the NFP lottery! Our economists are looking for a weaker outturn throughout: they expect nonfarm payrolls to increase +75k (consensus +89K), the unemployment rate to remain unchanged at 9.1% (consensus 9.0%) and initial jobless claim to rise +425k (consensus +420k).

"If correct, this is likely to result in mixed performance for the USD. Against the riskier currencies (AUD and NZD), we expect the USD to outperform as concerns over global prospects linger and weigh on sentiment. That said, our technical colleagues are bullish providing AUD/USD remains above 1.0650, and they look for NZD/USD to push higher to 0.8395

"Where we expect the USD to underperform is against the EUR, as the weakening US employment picture reminds investors that US rate hikes are a long way off."
