WSJ:EU Needs Energy Regulator For Gas, Power Links-Italy Regulator
ROME (Dow Jones)--Italy's energy regulator Wednesday said the European Union should set up an energy watchdog to coordinate natural gas and electricity interconnections between the 27 member countries.
Investments in energy infrastructure "end up having a transnational dimension" and its reference point can't but be at a EU level, said energy regulator head Guido Bortoni at the annual presentation to parliament in Rome.
Interconnections would not only boost energy security in the European Union but also help to lower gas and power prices, said Bortoni.
The existing agency for the cooperation of energy regulators, or ACER, could become the equivalent of the European Central Bank for the energy sector, said Italian Energy Regulator Commissioner Valeria Termini.
