NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Oil futures CL1Q +0.11% for August delivery traded slightly up Friday morning in a quiet market ahead of U.S. non-farm payroll data. Benchmark Nymex crude oil rose less than 1% to $99.04 a barrel after receiving a boost from two surprisingly strong job reports yesterday. The ADP report, which is used as an early gauge for non-farm payroll data, showed that private-sector employment rose 157,000. Further, initial jobless claims dropped 14,000 to a seasonally adjusted 418,000 in the week ended July 2.
