Prices for the cheapest regular unleaded gasoline in Newnan have shot up 12 cents since Monday.
Some stations on Bullsboro Drive had regular unleaded for $3.63 on Monday. On Thursday, those same stations were charging $3.75.
The increase in the state average price for regular unleaded, however, is much smaller.
The state average was $3.669 on Monday, according to AAA's fuelgaugereport.com site. On Thursday, it was $3.707.
Also on Thursday, prices for crude oil topped $100 per barrel for the first time since early June.
The increased price was based on "an improving outlook for the U.S. Economy" and signs of an agreement on more financial aid for Greece, according to the Associated Press.
Benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude for August delivery settled at $99.13 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, after rising to $100.16 earlier in the day.
Brent Crude, which is used to price many international varieties, actually fell in price, settling at $117.51 on the ICE Futures exchange, according to AP.
The national average price for regular unleaded rose from $3.676 Monday to $3.689 Thursday.
The International Energy Agency has said it may release more oil from reserves to hold off future oil spikes. The IEA said it "stands ready" to add more if needed, according to The AP.
The IEA's release of 60 million barrels on June 23 didn't have the desired effect of lowering gas prices, at least not for long.
Since that announcement, the price of benchmark crude increased nearly 5 percent and pump prices have risen 2 percent, according to AP.
