READSBORO, Vt. (AP) — Vermont State Police say they're investigating a rash of copper thefts that has plagued Readsboro, Pownal and Arlington in recent months.
The rising price of scrap metal is apparently driving the thefts. Sgt. Mike Marvin of the state police says thieves have been entering vacant homes that are either seasonal or rental and cutting copper out of heating systems and air conditioning ducts.
Marvin tells the Bennington Banner that the thefts typically occur in daylight, at homes located on back roads in rural areas.
