SHANGHAI (Dow Jones)--China's yuan fell against the U.S. dollar late Friday after the People's Bank of China guided the currency lower to reflect the U.S. unit's strength against other major currencies in the overseas markets.
On the over-the-counter market, the dollar was at CNY6.4404 around 0830 GMT, up from Thursday's close of CNY6.4390. It traded between CNY6.4385 and CNY6.4455.
The yuan has risen 6.0% against the U.S. unit since June 2010, when China effectively ended its currency's two-year-long peg to the dollar and vowed to make the yuan more flexible.
The People's Bank of China set the dollar-yuan central parity rate at 6.4451, up from Thursday's 6.4386, following the dollar's gains overseas. The ICE Dollar Index, which tracks the U.S. dollar against a trade-weighted basket of currencies, was at 75.252 late Thursday in New York, up from 74.044 late Wednesday. At 0830 GMT, the dollar index was at 75.084.
Traders' eyes are fixed on the U.S. non-farm payrolls report due at 1230 GMT. Economists surveyed by Dow Jones Newswires expect payrolls to have risen by 75,000 and the July unemployment rate to have stayed at 9.2%.
"Traders are very cautious now as we aren't sure where the market is going given the recent volatility in the global markets," said a Shanghai-based foreign-bank trader.
But traders noted unrest in the global markets won't change the yuan's appreciation trend amid huge domestic inflation pressure.
"I think many customers sold the dollar in the afternoon because they believe the yuan's broad uptrend remains intact," said a Beijing-based local-bank trader.
Offshore, one-year dollar-yuan nondeliverable forwards rose to 6.3850/6.3950 from 6.3670/6.3700 late Thursday, implying a 0.9% rise by the yuan against the U.S. currency over the next year.
In the offshore yuan market in Hong Kong, where the Chinese currency floats freely, the dollar-yuan exchange rate was at 6.4345 late Friday, up from 6.4230 late Thursday.
