NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- The dollar extended gains against the euro on Tuesday, after reversing from negative territory in European trading hours, as U.S. stocks gave back some of the prior session's gains and worries about European sovereign debt expanded to France. The dollar index DXY +0.76% , which measures the greenback's performance against a basket of six currencies, rose to 74.422, from as low as 73.821 overnight and from 74.307 in North American trade late Tuesday. The euro EURUSD -0.94% fell to $1.4234 from $1.4274 Tuesday. It topped $1.44 earlier.
