LONDON (MarketWatch) -- European stock markets closed sharply lower Monday, as renewed worries about the euro-zone debt crisis and global growth spooked investors. The pan-European Stoxx 600 index XX:SXXP -3.81% fell 4.1% to 223.45. Germany's DAX 30 index DX:DAX -4.96% sank 5.3% to 5,246.18 and France's CAC-40 index FR:PX1 -4.39% dropped 4.7% to 2,999.54. Banking shares were particularly hard hit, as Deutsche Bank AG DE:DBK -7.36% slumped 8.9% in Frankfurt, Societe Generale FR:GLE -8.59% fell 8.6% in Paris, and Royal Bank of Scotland Group PLC UK:RBS -11.96% tumbled 12.3% in London.
