SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Crude-oil futures stumbled Tuesday as U.S. stocks opened sharply lower, bringing to mind concerns about oil demand. Crude for October delivery CL1V -2.39% declined $1.97, or 2.3%, to $84.51 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Equities are viewed as a proxy for growth in the U.S. and, by extension, for oil consumption.
