IBN: Gold retreats from peak on global cues, sluggish demand

New Delhi, Sep 7 (PTI) Gold retreated from record level in the bullion markets today on a heavy sell-off, triggered by sharp losses in global markets. In the National Capital, gold suffered the most, dropping by Rs 930 to Rs 27,820 per ten gram, followed by Chennai where it slumped by Rs 750 to Rs 27,710. In Mumbai, the precious metal plunged by Rs 680 to Rs 27,490 and in Kolkata by Rs 640 to Rs 28,015. Trading sentiment turned bearish after gold price dropped in international markets as rising equities curbed demand for an alternative asset, spurring investors to sell the metal after its rally to an all-time high. Gold in New York tumbled by USD 58.70 to USD 1,814.90 an ounce on the Comex. Absence of retail buying at prevailing higher levels and shifting of investors fund to rising equity reduced the precious metal''s demand. The BSE stock index regained 17,000 mark level after a month by gaining 202.19 points at 17,065.
