ET:Rupee hits 25 month low as shares slide, dollar up
MUMBAI: The Indian rupee dropped past 49 against the dollar on Thursday to its weakest in nearly 25 months following a global selloff in shares and as the US currency extended gains against majors.
At 0801 GMT, the partially convertible rupee was at 48.98 to a dollar, after hitting 49.01 -- a level last seen on Sept. 2, 2009, and down 1.4 percent from Wednesday.
The 30-share main stock index was down 2.6 per cent.
