MW: Wall Street kicks off fourth-quarter on weak note

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- U.S. stocks kicked off trading for the last quarter of 2011 on a downbeat note Monday as news that Greece won't meet its fiscal deficit targets prompted investors to take a cautious stance. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.84% gave up 28.75 points, or 0.3%, to 10,884.63, with 19 of its 30 components lower. The Nasdaq Composite COMP -1.09% shed 5.66 points, or 0.2%, to 2,409.24, while the the S&P 500 Index SPX -0.83% gave up 2.43 points, or 0.2%, to 1,128.99. Among the blue-chips, Coca-Cola Co. KO -3.22% shed 2.2% as JP Morgan cut the stock rating to neutral from overweight, while weaker crude-oil prices pulled Exxon Mobil Corp. XOM -1.40% down 0.9%.
