MW: Crude, gold futures down modestly on firm dollar

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Crude-oil and gold futures were mildly pressured by a strong dollar early Tuesday against the backdrop of caution over euro-zone debt troubles. Light, sweet crude-oil prices for delivery in December CL1Z -0.26% shed 20 cents to $97.94 a barrel, with U.S. stock index futures pointing to a lower opening despite data showing an improvement in retail sales for October and a gauge of manufacturing activity for November. December gold futures GC1Z -0.34% , meanwhile, dropped $6.60 to $1,771.80 an ounce.
