SHANGHAI (Dow Jones)--China's yuan was lower against the U.S. dollar late Tuesday, tracking a lower reference rate from the central bank after the euro sank to a 10-week low against the dollar.
On the over-the-counter market, the dollar was at CNY6.3652 around 0830 GMT, up from CNY6.3606 late Monday. It traded in a range of CNY6.3634 to CNY6.3673.
Ahead of trading, the People's Bank of China fixed the dollar-yuan central parity rate at 6.3359, up from 6.3297 Monday, after the euro tumbled overnight amid concern about possible further downgrades to euro-zone sovereign bonds.
The yuan continued to trade near the bottom of its permitted intraday range against the dollar. However, it stopped short of hitting its downside limit after hitting it in each of the previous nine sessions.
"The tension between the PBOC and traders has eased somewhat. The PBOC let the fixing [rate] rebound, narrowing the gap between the fixing and the spot level," a trader at an Asian bank in Shanghai said.
Some analysts have said the yuan's frequent hitting of its intraday limit recently may spur the PBOC to widen its trading band. However, traders said they don't expect such a move anytime soon.
"With the euro zone facing potentially bigger problems ahead, I don't think China is going to make any big moves on its currency policy for now," a second trader at an Asian bank in Shanghai said.
The yuan is up 3.5% against the dollar this year and 7.2% since June 2010, when China ended the yuan's peg to the dollar.
Offshore, the yuan fell against the dollar in both the nondeliverable forward and spot markets, tracking the onshore market. One-year dollar-yuan nondeliverable forward contracts rose to 6.4260/6.4300 from 6.4000/6.4100 late Monday, implying a 0.98% fall by the yuan against the U.S. currency over the next year.
In Hong Kong, where the yuan floats freely, the dollar-yuan exchange rate was at 6.3875 late Tuesday, up from 6.3610 late Monday.
