CO:Sensex down 121 points, weak rupee and rising inflation weigh
MUMBAI (Commodityonline): Indian bourses opened tad lower amid weak global cues. Indices soon recovered all the losses. Short covering in Banks, Pharma and Capital Goods stocks led the gain in opening session. On the other hand Metal and Realty stocks remained weak.
Indices soon plunged after disappointing monthly inflation data announced. WPI for month of November came in at 9.11% against 9.73% in October. Street was expecting inflation below 9%.
Weak European cues also spoiled sentiment. Indices erased yesterday's gain close near day's low. Markets breadth remained negative on broad base selling. Midcap and Smallcap indices closed with loss of 0.95% and 0.81% respectively. Benchmark indices closed with loss of 0.7% each.
BSE Sensex closed at 15881.14 with the loss of 121.37 points and at NSE Nifty closed at 4763.25 with the loss of 37.35 points at the end of the day. BSE Midcap index closed at 5430.05 with the loss of 52.15 points and BSE Smallcap index closed at 5869.98 with the loss of 48.19 points.
In percentage term key losers were Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (NSE: BPCL), Tata Steel Ltd (NSE: TATASTEEL) and Tata Power Company Ltd (NSE: TATAPOWER) while key gainers were Sun Pharmaceuticals Industries Ltd (NSE: SUNPHARMA), ITC Ltd (NSE: ITC) and Bharti Airtel Ltd (NSE: BHARTIARTL).
On sectoral front almost all the sectoral indices closed in red barring FMCG sector closed in marginally in green. Major selling was seen in Realty, Metal, Auto, Capital Goods and Oil & Gas sectors. Markets breadth on BSE remained negative were 1024 advances against 1713 declines stocks.
From the perspective of weight in Nifty key losers were Housing Development Finance Corporation(NSE: HDFC), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd (NSE: M&M) and Tata Steel Ltd (NSE: TATASTEEL) while key gainers were ITC Ltd (NSE: ITC), Bharti Airtel Ltd (NSE: BHARTIARTL) and Sun Pharmaceuticals Industries Ltd (NSE: SUNPHARMA).
