NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- U.S. stocks on Friday rose modestly, adding to weekly gains, after economic data had durable goods rising in November by the most in four months. A separate report had consumer spending rising less than forecast last month.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.24% added 13.1 points to 1,2182.75, with 20 of its 30 components rising.
The S&P 500 SPX +0.31% added 2.2 points to 1,256.20, with telecom and utilities leading gains that included all but one of its 10 major sectors. Financials weighed,
The Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.32% advanced 4.21 points to 2,603.66.
Advancers outpaced decliners almost 2 to 1 on the New York Stock Exchange, where 55 million shares traded as of 9:50 a.m. Eastern.
