MW: Europe stocks push higher, led by banks, resources

MADRID (MarketWatch) -- European stock markets made a late afternoon push higher in afternoon trading on Friday, though volume was low on the last trading day of the year. The Stoxx Europe 600 index XX:SXXP +0.57% rose 0.5% to 243.71, while the German DAX 30 index DX:DAX +0.85% rose 0.8% to 5,898.35 and the French CAC 40 index FR:PX1 +0.29% rose 0.1% to 3,131.63. The FTSE 100 index UK:UKX +0.10% closed at midday, ending the session largely flat at 5,572.28 and down 5.6% for the year.
