WSJ:EU Rehn:Commission Working on Scenario Greece Stays With Euro
BRUSSELS (Dow Jones)--The European Commission is working on the assumption Greece remains in the 17-member euro zone, Economics Commissioner Olli Rehn said.
That's as the Mediterranean nation grapples with political upheaval that may lead it losing the bailout financing it needs to stay afloat.
"We are not working on the scenario of a Greek exit," Rehn said in an interview to be aired later on Friday on the U.K.'s Channel 4 Television. "We are working on the basis of a scenario of Greece staying in."
European Union Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht said in an interview published Friday with De Standaard newspaper, that the commission and the European Central Bank were "working on emergency scenarios if Greece does not make it."
The commission spokeswoman Pia Ahrenkilde Hansen dismissed De Gucht's comments. "This is not a scenario that we are working on," she told reporters.
