TH:Rupee touches record low of 56.57 against dollar

The rupee hit a record low of 56.57 against the US dollar on Thursday after the US Federal Reserve disappointment on the bond programme and HSBC’s China factory data showed contraction.

The rupee had breached the previous all-time low of 56.52 on May 31 on the Interbank Foreign Exchange (Forex) market.

At 1.40 pm, the domestic currency was trading at 56.50 to the dollar on falling euro and continued demand for greenback from oil importers.

Continuing the downslide, the rupee opened lower at 56.35 from its second worst closing of 56.15 on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, the RBI Governor had said that the central bank would intervene only to contain the volatility of the rupee.

The inter-bank call rates opened higher at 8.25 per cent after it softened to 8.10 per cent on Wednesday. Currently, it was trading at 8.20 per cent.

The 8.79 per cent government security maturing in 2021 was trading higher at Rs 102.85 at a yield of 8.34 per cent.

The bond rates closed at Rs 102.56 with a yield of 8.39 per cent yesterday.
