MW: U.S. stocks gain on hopes for euro zone

By Kate Gibson, MarketWatch
NEW YORK (MarketWatch) — U.S. stocks rose Friday, with the S&P 500 index joining the Dow industrials in positive turf for the week, after Germany and France jointly pledged to protect the euro zone.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.50% rose 90.21 points, or 0.7%, to 12,978.14.

The S&P 500 index SPX +0.71% added 11.16 points, or 0.9%, to 1,371.70.

The Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.60% gained 19.96 points, or 0.7%, to 2,913.20.

For every stock declining, more than three gained on the New York Stock Exchange, where 115 million shares were exchanged as of 10 a.m. Eastern.

The major stock indexes held their gains after a gauge of consumer sentiment came in just above expectations, as did a separate report on U.S. economic growth in the second quarter. See market stream .
