MW: Oil lower, gold holds to gains after 3-month high

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Oil futures inched lower Wednesday, leaving behind early gains as investors took a breather after a three-month high. Gold seesawed between small gains and losses after also settling at its highest level since May. Crude for October delivery CLV2 -0.32% , the new front-month contract, was off 23 cents, or 0.2%, to $96.60 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Gold for December delivery GCZ2 -0.01% gained $1, or 0.1%, to $1,644 an ounce on the Comex division of the Nymex.
