MW:Dollar steadies with all eyes on Bernanke's speech

MADRID (MarketWatch) -- The U.S. dollar was mostly steady in European trading hours on Thursday, as investors awaited a key speech due from Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke for the following day. The dollar index DXY -0.09% , which measures the currency against a basket of six rivals, traded at 81.481, compared to 81.551 in late North Aemrican trading on Wednesday. The euro EURUSD +0.20% steadied at $1.2546, versus $1.2568 on Wednesday. Against the Japanese yen USDJPY -0.09% , the dollar was also largely unchanged at ¥78.64 versus ¥78.68 late Wednesday. The WSJ dollar index XX:BUXX -0.10% , which measures the dollar against a wider basket of currencies, edged down to 71 from 71.03.
