VALLETTA: Euro zone member Malta pulled out of recession in the second quarter of this year, with the economy growing by 0.9 percent in real terms, the Mediterranean island's statistics office said on Friday.
Malta had entered recession in the first three months of the year after its economy contracted for the second quarter in a row.
The economy contracted by 0.5 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2011 and by 1.2 per cent in the three months to March.
The office said that provisional estimates indicated that the GDP for the second quarter amounted to 1,658.8 million euros.
Total final consumption expenditure decreased by 1.4 per cent in real terms while gross fixed capital formation declined by 1.7 per cent. Both exports and imports increased.
