MW: U.S. stocks turn higher after existing home sales

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- U.S. stocks shifted into moderate gains after a weak open, finding solid footing after midmorning data Wednesday showed sales of existing homes jumped 7.8% in August, to the best level in more than a year. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.32% was up 34 points, or 0.3%, at 13,598 versus a roughly 11-point gain before the data. The S&P 500 SPX +0.19% turned slightly higher, rising 2.5 points to 1,462. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.03% gained 1.1 points to 3,179.
