NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- The major U.S. stock indexes turned mostly lower on Friday, erasing early gains as cheer over better-than-expected employment data gave way to nervousness ahead of the U.S. presidential election early next week. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.26% fell 14.3 points to 13,218.18 and the Nasdaq Composite COMP -0.19% slipped 3.52 points to 3,016.48. Paring gains, the S&P 500 index SPX -0.03% was last up less than a point at 1,428.43. Stocks had opened with modest gains, buoyed by data showing that the economy created 171,000 jobs in October, more than economists expected.
