The rupee today strengthened by 33 paise to 53.44 against the dollar in early trade at the Interbank Foreign Exchange (forex) market on selling of the US currency by exporters amid foreign capital inflows.
Besides, a higher opening in the domestic equity market supported the rupee, forex dealers said.
The rupee had shed six paise to close at 53.77 against the dollar yesterday due to fresh demand for the US currency from importers.
Meanwhile, the BSE benchmark index Sensex rose by 26.76 points, or 0.13 per cent, to 20,128.58 in early trade.
