ST: Stock markets mixed in early trading as gold price surges
North American stocks were mixed at the open Wednesday ahead the U.S. Federal Reserve monetary policy announcement.
The TSX rose 50 points to 12,880, while the Venture exchange added four points at 1,236.
Leading the most-active list in Toronto were Research In Motion (TSX: T.RIM) shares, up 5% to $16.47 on volume of more than 2.8 million shares on the day of the much-anticipated BlackBerry 10 launch.
The Dow was down five points to 13,949, and the Nasdaq advanced eight points to 3,181.
The price of gold jumped $19 to US$1680, while silver prices climbed 71 cents to $31.89.
