MW: U.S. stocks open higher in rebound from prior day

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- U.S. stocks on Tuesday began with strong gains in the wake of Wall Street's worst session since November, with investors looking at a deal by Dell Inc. DELL 0.00% to be taken private and coming data on the U.S. services industry in January. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.60% rose 84.71 points, or 0.6%, to 13,964.79. The S&P 500 index SPX +0.57% climbed 9.39 points, or 0.6%, to 1,505.10. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.31% advanced 9.78 points, or 0.3%, to 3,140.95.
