Germany's fourth quarter GDP report released at 2:00 am ET showed that the biggest euro area economy contracted 0.6 percent in the quarter, following a 0.2 percent rise in the previous quarter. Economists had expected the economy contracted 0.5 percent sequentially.
The euro edged lower against its major rivals after the report. As of 2:02 am ET, the euro was trading at 1.2331 against the Swiss franc, 0.8648 against the pound, 125.50 against the yen and 1.3408 against the dollar.
