LONDON (MarketWatch) -- European stock markets battled to stay in positive territory in afternoon trade on Tuesday, as investors eyed market action in the U.S. where stocks wavered around the flat line. The Stoxx Europe 600 index XX:SXXP +0.09% was slightly lower at 287.60, after trading as high as 289.56 earlier in the day. Germany's DAX 30 index DX:DAX -0.17% dropped 0.3% to 7,636.78, while France's CAC 40 index FR:PX1 +0.13% slipped 0.2% to 3,659.62. The U.K.'s FTSE 100 index UK:UKX +0.43% rose 0.2% to 6,291.86.
