MW: Europe stocks hold losses after Empire State data

LONDON (MarketWatch) -- European stock markets held on to losses in afternoon action on Monday, after the New York Fed's Empire State index fell to 3.1 points in April, missing expectations of a 7.8 reading. The Stoxx Europe 600 index XX:SXXP -0.71% dropped 0.7% to 290.35. The U.K.'s FTSE 100 index UK:UKX -0.81% slid 0.8% to 6,330.55, while France's CAC 40 index FR:PX1 -0.52% lost 0.6% to 3,707.74. Germany's DAX 30 index DX:DAX -0.72% fell 0.7% to 7,687.57.
