NZ: Nikkei closes 0.44 pct lower on firmer yen |

TOKYO, May 1 — Nikkei ended 0.44 percent lower Wednesday as sentiment was dented by a firmer yen.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average closed down 61.51 points, or 0.44 percent, from Tuesday at 13,799.35.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 6.76 points, or 0.58 percent, at 1, 158.37.
Decliners were led by airlines, securities and machinery shares, while gainers included paper, fishery and forestry firms and sea transporters.
The turnover was about 2,418.1 billion yen (about 24.62 billion U.S. dollars).
