LM:Indian rupee hits 56-mark on global dollar strength
Mumbai: The Indian rupee on Thursday weakened past the 56-mark at 11.46am against the dollar. The domestic currency fell to its lowest in over 8-1/2 months, heading for a fifth consecutive session of falls, as the dollar rallied at the prospect the Federal Reserve might scale back its stimulus programme this year.
The rupee opened the session at 55.84 per dollar on Thursday versus its previous close of 55.46/47.
At 11.51am, the rupee was trading at 55.97, down 0.92%. India’s equity benchmark Sensex was down 1.64% to 19,732.88 points. Since January, the rupee has fallen 1.65%.
