The ringgit closed lower against the US dollar today in tandem with most emerging Asian currencies, dealers said.
At 5pm today, the local unit was quoted at 3.1970/1000 to the US dollar compared with 3.1880/1910 at Wednesday's close.
A dealer said emerging Asian currencies fell today as solid US housing data and higher Treasury yields reignited expectations that the Federal Reserve may scale back its monetary stimulus earlier than other central banks do.
The local currency was mostly lower against other major currencies.
It depreciated against the Singapore dollar to 2.5207/5239 from 2.5131/5156 at yesterday's close and fell against the yen to 3.1964/1000 from 3.1907/1953 previously.
However, the local note rose against the British pound to 4.8949/8008 from yesterday's 4.8977/8036 and improved against the Euro to 4.2152/2198 from 4.2190/2239 previously.-- Bernama
