UPI: Crude oil at 26-month high

NEW YORK, Aug. 28 (UPI) -- Crude oil for October delivery topped $110 per barrel in New York Wednesday as U.S. officials have threatened to launch retributive strikes against Syria.

NBC News has reported that missile attacks could commence Thursday in an effort to send a message to Syrian President Bashar Assad that domestic chemical weapons attacks will not be tolerated.

The tension has rattled energy markets, pushing oil prices in New York to their highest level since May 2011.

West Texas Intermediate crude oil added $1.51 to $110.52 per barrel. Reformulated blendstock gasoline gained 3.36 cents to reach $2.9463 per gallon. Home heating oil added 2.74 cents to reach $3.193 per gallon.

Natural gas shed 1.8 cents to $3.555 per million British thermal units.

At the pump, the national average price for a gallon of unleaded regular gasoline was $3.546, up from Tuesday's $3.542, the AAA Fuel Gauge report said.
