BT:Ringgit closes easier against US dollar

The ringgit closed easier against the US dollar today, dampened by weak risk appetite on the back of a stronger greenback, dealers said.

At 5pm, the ringgit was quoted at 3.2960/2990 to the US dollar compared with 3.2920/2950 on Tuesday.

A dealer said the dollar remained strong due to growing optimism that the US economy would continue with its solid recovery, following the Federal Reserve's decision to begin tapering its stimulus programme next month.

Against other major currencies, the local note was traded mostly lower.

The ringgit depreciated to 2.5996/5021 against the Singapore dollar from Tuesday's 2.5970/5008, it fell to 5.3975/3041 against the British pound from 5.3739/3797 and weakened against the euro to 4.5109/5157 from 4.5012/5062.

However, the domestic currency rose to 3.1459/1500 against the yen from 3.1575/1613 previously.

The local foreign exchange market was closed yesterday for Christmas.-- Bernama
