MW: U.S. stocks step up at open; S&P 500 eyes record

By Victor Reklaitis
NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- U.S. stocks rose at the open on Monday, rallying after their losses last week as traders shrugged off fresh concerns about China's property market that hit Asian equities. The S&P 500 SPX +0.52% gained 7 points to 1,843, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.51% tacked on 60 points to 16,163. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.56% added 17 points to 4,281. The S&P 500 and Dow both dipped for the week last week halting two-week winning streaks, but the S&P still remains within striking distance of its Jan. 15 record close of 1,848.38. The Nasdaq bucked the negative trend last week, achieving its third straight weekly advance in a row. In economic news on Monday, traders will watch for new data from the Dallas Federal Reserve Manufacturing Survey due at 10:30 a.m. Eastern.
