NS: US stocks edge lower in early trading, pulling the market back from a record high
 
Energy companies were lagging the rest of the market early Tuesday as the price of crude oil fell.

The Standard and Poor's 500 index fell five points, or 0.2 percent, to 2,092 as of 9:35 a.m. Eastern time.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 48 points, or 0.3 percent, to 17,971. The Nasdaq fell eight points, or 0.2 percent, to 4,884.

The S&P 500 closed at a record high on Friday. U.S. markets were closed Monday for the Presidents' Day holiday.

The price of oil fell $1.17 to $51.59 a barrel in New York.

Bond prices fell. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose to 2.05 percent.
