MW: U.S. trade gap in goods widens to 7-month high

The U.S. trade deficit for goods widened in January to the largest level since June, as Americans firms struggled to export amid a rising dollar and a languid global economy.

The seasonally adjusted trade deficit widened to $62.2 billion from $61.5 billion in December, the Commerce Department reported Friday in its “advanced” look at trade. This number excludes services, which makes a small but growing part of the trade picture.

The export decline, to $116.8 billion from $120.2 billion, was led by a decline in foods, feeds and beverages, though every major category declined.

Imports also fell, to $179 billion from $181.7 billion.
