MW: Dollar gains vs. rivals after dismal retail sales data
The U.S. dollar rose against other major currencies Wednesday after the government reported that U.S. seasonally adjusted retail sales plunged 2.7% in December. The dollar index , which measures the U.S. currency against a basket of six major counterparts, rose 0.7% to 84.61 compared with 83.96 earlier in the session. The euro fell 0.6% to $1.3104.
