The benchmark Sensex today opened lower by over 144 points on sustained selling by funds in heavyweight stocks amid weak global trend.
The Bombay Stock Exchange barometer, which had fell to over three-year low in previous day's trading, lost 126.76 points to 8,061.16 points in first five minutes of trading.
The broad-based National Stock Exchange's Nifty moved down by 37.25 points to 2,539.45 points.
Marketmen said banking shares fell after the Reserve Bank's move to cut key interest rates raised concerns that it might increase bad loans.
They said a weakening global trend too dampened the trading sentiments.
